2018 Malbec

Oregon Malbec

2018 was our second vintage of wines and our first year making Malbec. The fruit was hand-harvested, cluster-sorted, destemmed, and berry sorted before fermentation. It was inoculated and fermented nearly dry before being gently pressed, settled, and racked to barrel.

The wine matured 20 months in barrel, where oak components began to integrate into the wine and micro-oxygenation stabilized tannin and color complexes.

We filtered and bottled the wine in July 2020, and decided to bottle age the wine for another year.  The wait is over and this wine is now perfect for drinking!  And while this wine didn't wine the Oregon Wine Experience 2023 Best Malbec - it's only because it was too shy to enter the contest.

Southern Oregon Malbec Sweet or Dry?

Is the 2018 Malbec, sweet or dry? Pfft, that's like asking a punk rocker to play the harp. Ridiculous, right? This Malbec is dry like british humour.  But in general, Malbec doesn't fit into your cute little categories. It's the black sheep, the rule-breaker, the James Dean of the wine world. So, you want sweet or dry? How about you just sit back and let Malbec be... awesome?

And what makes a wine sweet or dry? Now that's a question that could use a little enlightenment.

Well, the sweetness or dryness of a wine is determined by the amount of residual sugar left in the wine after fermentation. Sweet wines have higher sugar content, while dry wines have little to no residual sugar. This distinction can greatly impact the taste and overall experience of the wine.

But when it comes to Malbec, it's a different story altogether. This bold and expressive grape variety from Argentina doesn't conform to the traditional notions of sweetness or dryness. Its flavors are rich, its tannins are firm, and its personality is as complex as they come. Malbec doesn't play by the rules; it creates its own path, inviting you to savor every sip without worrying about fitting into a specific category.

So, next time you're pondering over whether a Malbec is sweet or dry, remember that it's not about fitting into a box. It's about embracing the rebellious spirit of this wine and letting it take you on a journey of bold flavors and unexpected delights. Just sit back, pour yourself a glass of Malbec, and let its awesomeness speak for itself. Cheers to the rule-breakers and the black sheep of the wine world!
